Severe Weather Modeling Workshop in Cuba

SVGMETS was represented at the recently concluded workshop on Severe Weather Modeling that took place in Havana, Cuba. The workshop which ran from August 13-16 saw Meteorologists from several Caribbean countries including Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St Kitts Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Regional Institution represented included the Caricom Climate Change Centre, Caribbean Risk Management Initiative, and UNDP regional Office, Cuba and the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology. The workshop considered the use of the MM5 Weather Modeling software as a tool for modeling severe weather. Participants received hands-on training dealing with generating output graphics and coding scripts that generated these outputs. The participants together with the cosponsors considered the future development of Severe Weather Modeling in the Caribbean and determined a way forward. Modeling Centered were to be located in Barbados (CIMH), Jamaica (UWI), Belize (CCCC) and Cuba (INSMET). The Workshop was sponsored by the government of Norway and executed under the auspices of United nation Development Program and CRMI.

   Regional Interest in New TV Weather Presentation

The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will host the Caribbean Meteorological Council 47th Annual meeting November 26 - 30, 2007. The week of meetings will be held at the Foreign Affairs Conference Room in the Administrative Complex, Kingstown. The Directors of Meteorology meeting will be held on the 26th. The Board of Governors and Council meeting will follow.
Officials will meet to review and discuss weather related issues for the region. Participants are expected from Guyana in the southern Caribbean to Jamaica in the Northern Caribbean; from Forecast and Non-Forecast Offices across the region.

   SVGMETS Provides Cricket Weather For CWC 2007

Friday April 1, 2007 - SVGMETS provided daily detailed forecasts for the recently held CWC 2007 Warm-up matches held her at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex, March 5 - 9, 2007. The daily detailed forecast featured 3-hour outlook of the expected conditions. The product which was a first of its kind for the Service providing for such a world-class event was part of a regional commitment to provide weather for the CWC 2007. Similar services were provided by the Met. Services in Jamaica, Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis, and by the CIMH (regional Meteorological Institute). SVGMETS forecast was verified to be about 75 - 80 percent successful.

  SVGMETS at Governor's Hurricane Conference

St. Vincent and the Grenadines  was represented that the recent Florida Governor's Hurricane Conference held from May 14-18, 2007. SVGMETS, Meteorological Officer, Antonio Joyette, attend the week of training and conferences. The Conference took place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and received participants from several Caribbean, Latin America and US Gulf and East Coast states. Training sessions were conducted in several disciplines including Emergency Management, Meteorology, Communications, Safety and Security.
